Admission

Attention: Prospective undergraduate teacher education and Health, Sport, and Exercise Sciences students please note that you may only apply to one program. Please choose which program you want to apply to before submission.

The department admits students to licensure programs once a year. Applications and all supporting materials are due in mid-September; check with the School of Education advising center for the exact date.

Students generally apply at the beginning of their sophomore year and begin coursework in the School of Education spring semester of their sophomore year.

Admission requirements:

Applicants must complete or be enrolled in all courses required for admission, usually 31-35 hours of college credit. Required admission courses include English composition (two classes), mathematics (two classes), speech, psychology, American History, a science with lab, sociology or anthropology, and introductory education classes.

Students must have a 2.75 grade point average in the required classes above as well as a minimum 2.75 cumulative grade point average.

Other admission requirements include no grade lower than "C" in English, Mathematics, or Communication Studies.

Admission to the unified early childhood, elementary, English and social studies education programs is highly selective with a limited number of students admitted.

Foreign language, middle level mathematics and middle level science education are open programs; however, not all students who meet minimum admission requirements are admitted. Students applying to open programs must have a minimum of a 2.5 grade point average in the content area courses as well as satisfactory references and essays and a minimum 2.75 cumulative grade point average.

Admissions decisions are made by the teacher education faculty from the departments of special education and curriculum and teaching. Decisions are based on grades and submitted materials, including essays and references, that show experiences with youth and knowledge of teaching.
